How Do Small Business Owners Develop Quality Staff? March 1998 — Small business owners who participated in last month's survey agreed that taking an active interest in personnel development is the best way to retain quality staff and ensure productivity. When asked how often they met with employees to discuss and track goals, 35 percent of respondents said they meet with employees on an annual basis and track progress every six months. Weekly staff meetings were also cited as an important way to keep employees informed about company projects and progress. Approximately 48 percent of survey participants said their company met once a week to keep the business running smoothly. One quarter of the respondents also reported they include employees in management decisions at least once a week. In terms of compensation, nearly 40 percent of survey participants said they offer a base salary only to employees; however, about one-third reported that they provide healthcare benefits and 16 percent include profit sharing and 401K packages. These benefits are encouraging news for employees who are weighing the options of working for a large corporation or a small business.
