Small Business Owners Find Year-End Close-Outs Complicated. So Who Do They Turn to For Help?
December 1997 Is "closing the company books" about as appealing as reorganizing your filing system? If it is among your least favorite aspects of managing a small business, you're not alone. In a recent on-line survey, small business owners were asked to rate their year-end close-out process. None of the respondents viewed this activity as "easy," with over 40 percent describing the process as "moderately difficult or complicated."
When asked who assisted in the close-out process, nearly 60 percent claimed sole responsibility for reviewing the company books and more than 40 percent said they turn to a SCORE counselor, accountant or business colleague.
In measuring company profitability, less than 30 percent of small business owners said they were able to determine profitability from year to year, while over 40 percent said they could not or did not know.
To help ease the close-out process and effectively measure your business' profitability, call SCORE at 1-800-634-0245. They'll help you find a volunteer counselor in your area to provide assistance.
